When an impolite customer caused a scene at the health food store, I knew she expected me to just accept her behavior without a fuss. Little did she realize that she was about to learn a valuable lesson.
That morning, I arrived at work, greeted by the familiar smell of fresh produce and herbal teas. As I tied my apron, I had a sense that today might be different.
“Hey, Grace! Ready for another busy day?” my coworker Ally joked from behind the counter.
I laughed, though I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. We had a regular customer who was particularly challenging.
We called her “Miss Difficult,” and her presence was always a cause for concern. She had a way of making every visit uncomfortable for us.
As I started my shift, I focused on the tasks at hand, knowing I needed this job to support my family. My mother’s medical bills and my sister’s college expenses made quitting out of the question.
A few minutes later, Ally leaned in and whispered, “Miss Difficult just arrived.”
My stomach tightened. “Great,” I murmured. “Just what I needed.”
The bell above the door jingled, and in she walked, her designer shoes clicking sharply. Without acknowledging me, she demanded her usual order.
“Carrot juice, please,” she said curtly.
I forced a smile. “Of course, ma’am. I’ll have it ready shortly.”
As I prepared the juice, I felt her eyes on me, scrutinizing every move. When I handed her the juice, she took a sip and made a face.
“This doesn’t taste right,” she complained, then unexpectedly threw the drink.
The juice splashed across my apron, and I stood there, stunned. She continued to complain loudly, making sure everyone noticed.
“Are you trying to ruin my day?” she yelled.
I wiped the juice from my face. “I’m sorry, ma’am. It’s the same recipe we always use.”
“I want a new one,” she demanded, her tone sharp.
